Physical Education (PE)

At Five Spires Academy we believe that physical education has a vital and unique role to play in a child’s development. As part of the PE curriculum, our children experience a wide range of individual, partner and team activities that help to build a positive attitude and help children to understand the role that regular physical activity can play in a balanced lifestyle.

The range of physical activities we provide includes athletics, games, dance, gymnastics and Year 4 attend weekly swimming lessons. All activities are designed to be enjoyable, vigorous, purposeful, and regular, to give children the maximum benefit, all children at Five Spires Academy participate in both indoor and outdoor PE sessions.

Extra-Curricular Activities

At lunchtime from Tuesday to Thursday, children are able to join in with a range of activities led by specialised Sports coaches.

Our After School sports provision is delivered by Progressive Sports, who offer a range of clubs on a half-termly rotation. Clubs include: gymnastics, tennis, archery, dodgeball and multi-skills amongst others.

KS2 have the opportunity to compete against other schools in the county including football, athletics, gymnastics and cross-country competitions.

At Five Spires Academy, we understand the importance of promoting children and young people's emotional health and wellbeing.

Our PSHE scheme is provided by Jigsaw, and we use their support for schools to ensure we are teaching children about mental health safely and effectively.

Purpose of Study

A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.

Who is the Five Spires Sportsperson?

The Five Spires Sportsperson participates in team games and understands what is meant by sportsmanship. They understand the principles of attacking and defending and apply this a range of team games. They can perform dances and routines and suggest ways to improve. They can evaluate others’ performances sensitively and constructively. The Five Spires Sportsperson is flexible, fit, strong and agile, and can apply a range of skills to a variety of games and activities. They understand the link between physical and mental health and aspire to live an active, healthy life.

Five Spires Curriculum Rationale

  • Objectives across all strands of PE revisited and embedded within and across year groups and key stages to ensure cumulative fluency; 
  • Engaging, challenging and inclusive activities and games develop pupils’ character and encourage resilience, fairness and respect; 
  • Development in all aspects of physical education encourages an active, healthy lifestyle and promotes both physical and mental well-being.
