Yearly Overview – Long Term Plan

Homework

At Five Spires Academy we believe homework plays an important role in consolidation, revision and practise of skills learnt in school. It helps keep parents informed about their child’s learning and progress. Through homework, children learn independence as well as organisation skills.

Daily reading

Please encourage your child to read daily in order to foster a love of reading. Any books, magazines, newspapers they read should be noted in the Reading Records. In Year 2, children receive a house point and a raffle ticket for every entry in their reading diary. At the end of every week, one winner is drawn from the raffle tickets and this person selects a prize from the prize box.

Multiplication tables

As directed by their class teacher children are expected to know their year group multiplication tables and respective facts, in Year 2, this is 2, 5 and 10 times tables with a developing knowledge of 3s at the end of the year to prepare them for Year 3. Children need to practice at home so they build their fluency and confidence.

Spellings

In KS1, your child will be taught and tested on a focussed spelling skill each week in school. A list of weekly spellings will be sent home and your child can practise these at home if they wish but this is not compulsory. Every child will take part in a spelling quiz every other Friday.

Alternate weekly Maths or English Homework

To consolidate your child's class learning, a piece of Maths or English homework will be set each week by their class teacher. This is linked to the learning that has taken place in school that week in order to consolidate and enhance their knowledge and understanding of the topics.

Additional learning challenges

Each term, your child will receive optional learning challenges linked to their Mini-Mission. If your child wishes to complete these additional pieces of homework, this will enhance their learning further.
