Teaching of Phonics and Early Reading
Teaching of Phonics
From Nursery through to Key Stage 1 we teach children to read using the Read Write Inc. phonics scheme.
This is a systematic taught programme of reading and writing skills using quality texts and a fun approach to learning.
As children progress through Key Stage 1 and into Key Stage 2 we use a variety of quality texts in guided reading. This approach provides opportunities to develop a range of reading strategies, good comprehension skills and a love of reading.
Talk For Writing
We use Talk for Writing techniques and strategies in our English curriculum, this provides children with the tools to develop as writers. It enables them to imitate the language they need for a particular piece of writing orally, before reading and analysing it and then writing their own version. It emphasises the importance of speaking and listening skills and performing texts using actions before moving on to writing independently.
Reading at Home
Reading at home with your child is an important part of their learning journey. Not only does it provide additional opportunities to practise the skills they have been learning at school, but can also promote a love for reading when sharing books at home with family and friends.
At Five Spires Academy, each child receives a reading record, reading book and a library book to read at home. Books are chosen carefully by teachers and are matched to the ability of the child. These will be changed weekly.
It is encouraged that children aim to read their book every night for 10 minutes. This should then be recorded in the child's reading diary. To support parents, we have designed support sheets for each book band, which outline the objectives for that particular book band along with a few suggested activities.
